Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) scored 4 points to close out a 9-0 run that opened up a double-digit lead, and sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) posted 5 points during a game-ending 7-0 run that sealed the outcome as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Oberlin in a semifinal game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Friday in Greencastle, Ind.
The Bishops led, 40-38, heading into the fourth quarter, and were up 42-40 after Schipfer and Oberlin's Alyson Jefferson traded buckets to open the period.
Senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) knocked down a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, Schipfer followed with a basket, and Joiner put home back-to-back lay-ins for a 51-40 Bishop lead with 5:29 left in regulation time.
It was still an 11-point game after sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) hit a jumper with 4:00 left in regulation time, but the Yeowomen scored the next 8 points, getting a 3-point play and a free throw from Jefferson along the way, to pull within 53-50 with 1:44 to play.
Schipfer broke to the hoop and hit a lay-in off a Delaney feed with 1:15 left, and after a Bishop stop, paid it forward with a feed to Joiner for a lay-in that made it a 57-50 count with :46 to go. Schipfer split a pair of free throws with :32 left and sealed the win with a lay-in at the :12 mark.
The first half was a defensive battle that saw only one lead of more than 3 points. Only one basket was scored during the final 5 minutes of the second quarter, that a 3-pointer by Oberlin's Sammy Spanier that gave the Yeowomen a 22-21 lead at the break.
Denison opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, but Oberlin stayed within 6 points until the Bishops' 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter.
Joiner led the Bishops with 23 points. Schipfer finished with 13 points. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) grabbed a team-best 8 rebounds and Delaney had a team-high 6 assists.
Woodard scored 12 points for Oberlin.
