Sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) rang up 14 points during a 27-3 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) surprassed a career milestone as the Bishops defeated Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Kenyon had tied the game at 29 on a pair of free throws by Katie Orefice midway through the second quarter.
The Bishops closed out the half with a 9-0 run highlighted by a Denison 3-pointer, with Joiner contributing an assist and a pair of free throws during that stretch. Ohio Wesleyan then opened the second half with an 18-3 burst, with Denison going 3-for-4 from downtown and adding a lay-in during that portion. Sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) finished off the run with a jumper from the lane that made it 56-32 with 4:07 left in the third period.
Orefice went 3-for-4 from the line and Grace Connery followed with a 3-pointer for Kenyon, but the margin would remain in the neighborhood of 20 points throughout the remainder of the contest.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the first 10 points of the game, with Joiner collecting 2 lay-ins and contributing a 3-point play and senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) drilling a 3-pointer.
The Ladies countered with an Orefice lay-in and a 3-pointer by Greta Propp, and came back to the the game at 14 when Propp hit a pair of free throws at the 3-minute mark of the opening period.
The Bishops moved out to a 9-point lead early in the second quarter thanks to a Joiner lay-in and trifectas by Denison and sophomore wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale), but Kenyon scored the next 9 points of the game, with Madelyn Anderson hitting a 3-pointer and Claudia Cooke adding a pair of free throws and a lay-in before Orefice evened the score at 29 with the 2 free throws.
Joiner finished with 16 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. The 16 points raised her career total to 1007, making her the 17th Ohio Wesleyan women's basketball player to surpass the 1000-point mark.
Denison led the Bishops with a season-high 22 points, Schipfer and Wolfe scored 12 points apiece, and Delaney dished out a team-best 8 assists.
Orefice scored 18 points for Kenyon.
