Wittenberg Holds Off Women's Basketball

Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) and sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored to stake Ohio Wesleyan to an early lead, but Wittenberg took the lead with a 15-1 run and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Springfield.

Buckets by Joiner and Schipfer gave the Bishops an early 4-0 lead, but Ohio Wesleyan would go for more than 7 minutes without a basket.  Meanwhile, the Tigers got a lay-in and a pair of free throws from Kristie Kalis and a 3-pointer by Abigail Yunker during a 15-1 run that resulted in a 15-5 lead with 1:45 left in the opening quarter, and Wittenberg would go on to a 29-19 lead at the intermission.

Sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) buried a 3-pointer during the closing seconds of the third quarter to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 48-43, and when sophomore guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, it was a 2-point game.

Wittenberg answered with baskets by Yunker and Delaney Williams to take a 52-46 lead, and the Tigers would keep the Bishops at arm's length throughout the remainder of the game, never allowing Ohio Wesleyan to come closer than 4 points.

Schipfer led Ohio Wesleyan with 19 points and 11 boards, Denison finished with 14 points, and Homan had a team-high 4 assists.

Kalis scored 13 points for Wittenberg.
