Mitchell 11, Ohio Wesleyan 7
Freshman third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) crushed a bases-clearing double that broke a 4-4 tie and gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead in the bottom of the eighth, but Mitchell scored 7 runs after 2 were out in the top of the ninth to take a non-conference win on Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Ohio Wesleyan's game against Swarthmore, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday in Port Charlotte, was canceled because of unplayable field conditions.
Mitchell had tied the score at 4 on back-to-back doubles by Lelo Martinez and Matt Falk in the top of the eighth.
Senior shortstop Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and was forced at second by junior outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep). After a double by senior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll), the Mariners intentionally walked sophomore outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) to load the bases. Mitchell pitcher Sam Majewski got senior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) to pop up for the second out, but Brazytis launched a ball to left center to score all 3 runs and give the Bishops the lead.
Junior righthander Michael Lipscomb (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) retired Justin Adorno and Angel Galindez to open the top of the ninth, but Bo Yaworski doubled to keep the game going and scored on a double by Dougie DelaCruz to make it 7-5. Hunter Yaworski then reached on an error by Withrow, with pinch-runner Elijah Morton scoring on the play. Martinez singled home pinch-runner Luke Sullivan to even the game at 7, with Martinez taking second on the throw. After an intentional walk to Falk to set up a force, John-John Jose and Steve Cochrane drew walks to plate the go-ahead run, and Adorno lined a double to right center to clear the bases.
The Mariners had broken a 1-1 tie in the fourth on Falk's leadoff home run and a sacrifice by Galindez, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI single from Stefancin and a 2-run single from junior second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) for a 4-3 lead.
Spranger finished the day at 3-for-4, while Stefancin was 2-for-3 and Withrow and Brazytis each went 2-for-4. Lipscomb was charged with the loss in relief for the Bishops.
Majewski, who allowed 6 hits over 4.1 innings of relief, was the winner for Mitchell.
