Sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) drove in a run to give the Bishops a 2-1 lead, and freshman catcher Sydney Vernadakis (Canal Winchester/Pickerington Central) delivered a 2-run pinch single to increase the margin to 5-1, but St. Mary's rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh to grab a non-conference win on Friday in Clermont, Fla.
In Friday's first game, Wheaton built a 5-0 lead and went on to take the win.
McKenna Myers plated a run to give St. Mary's the lead in the first inning, but the Bishops answered in the top of the second as sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) and sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) opened the inning with singles. The runners moved up on an infield out off the bat of freshman outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) and Anspach scored on an error by Belles second baseman Caitlin Traxler.
Sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) led off the third by reaching on Belles pitcher Libby Bierbaum's error. Back stole second, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on Bias' sacrifice fly for a 2-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
The Bishops added 3 runs in the fifth as freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory) singled and moved to second on an infield out. Anspach reached second on an error by St. Mary's rightfielder Rylee Hershberger, with Tuttle scoring on the play. Cegledy followed with a single, and both runners scored on Vernadakis' hit.
St. Mary's rallied in the seventh, opening the inning with singles by McKenna Grigoli and Shelby Dellasandro. Perkins, on in relief of sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood), fanned pinch-hitter Abigail Tietema and got McKenna Shoupe to line out for the second out, but Mac Pepper singled home Grigoli, and Traxler followed with a single to score Dellasandro to make it 5-3. Freshman righthander Sydney Good (Westerville/Central) relieved Perkins and walked Myers to load the bases before Alexis Rauch singled home Traxler and Pepper to even the score. Mandi Hettinger then reached on an error by Cegledy, with Myers scoring the game-winning run.
Cegledy went 3-for-4 to highlight the Ohio Wesleyan offense. Good was charged with the loss in relief.
In Friday's opener, Wheaton took the lead on a 2-run homer by Emilie Gist in the first inning and a 2-run homer by Estelle Rios made it 4-0 in the fourth. Gist singled in a run in the fifth to wrap up the Thunder scoring.
Bias led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on Anspach's double.
Back was 3-for-4 and Bias went 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Chittum was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
