Freshman midfielder Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) scored 4 times during the second quarter and sophomore attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) tallied 4 consecutive goals during the third quarter to help Ohio Wesleyan pull away for a non-conference win over Guilford on Friday in Greensboro, N.C.
The win was the Bishops' fifth straight, one short of Ohio Wesleyan's school-record 6-game season-opening winning streak in 2006.
Fleming set up Klabus on the only goal of the first quarter, then connected on 3 straight goals to open the second-quarter scoring. Kylie Horn put the Quakers on the scoreboard midway through the period, but Fleming and junior midfielder Evie Williams (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) followed with scores to give Ohio Wesleyan a 6-1 lead at the half.
Junior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored just 18 seconds into the third quarter, and Klabus reeled off 4 straight goals to extend the Bishop lead to 11-1 midway through the quarter.
Williams added a goal in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter as Ohio Wesleyan closed out the game.
Fleming finished with 5 goals and an assist, while Klabus scored 5 goals. Freshman Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) stopped 7 shots in the Bishop crease.
Maggie Hartnett scored 2 goals for Guilford. Zenna Carson recorded 18 saves for the Quakers.
