Ohio Wesleyan University junior Peyton Howell (Canton/GlenOak) won All-America honors in the high jump at the NCAA Division III indoor track & field championship meet on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Howell is the sixth Battling Bishop to win All-America honors in the indoor high jump. This is her first All-America citation.
Howell sailed through the first 3 heights (5-1¼, 5-3¼, and 5-4½) in as many attempts. Howell missed her first 2 attempts at 5-5¾ but cleared the bar on her third try to advance, then cleared 5-7 on her first attempt.
When the bar moved to 5-8, only 3 competitors were left in a showdown for the national champiomship. Jaidyn Appel of Tufts cleared the bar on the first try, Breya Christopher of Wartburg cleared on the second attempt, and Howell missed all 3 attempts to finish in third place.
Howell was tied for the No. 3 seed in the championship with a mark of 5-7¼.
