Sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) singled home a run to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 3-1, but 24th-ranked Muskingum held on for a win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday in New Concord.

In the nightcap, Muskingum's Madelyn Thomas and Alyssa Marlatt combined on a 5-hit shutout to help the Muskies complete the sweep.

Sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) and Muskingum's Hannah Smith traded zeroes through the first 4.0 innings of the opener, but the Muskies struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Sarah Piteo, a run-scoring bunt single by Kalie Eshelman, and an RBI triple from Mickayla Malone.

Ohio Wesleyan responded in the top of the sixth.  With 2 out, freshman infielder Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) singled and moved to second when sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) reached on an error by Muskie shortstop Claire Warschauer.  Cegledy followed with a single to bring the Bishops within 3-1, but Smith got out of the inning without any further damage.

Chittum struck out 4 and walked 1 in working the complete game.

Smith finished with a 3-hitter in collecting the win.

The nightcap saw the Muskies take the lead on Piteo's sacrifice in the second, and Haley Hawk hit a bases-clearing double in the fifth to account for the 4-0 final.

Sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Chittum was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.

Thomas pitched the first 6.0 innings and Marlatt worked a scoreless seventh for the Muskies.
