Junior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied a pair of goals during third quarter to help Ohio Wesleyan build a 13-7 lead, and the Bishops withstood a frantic Otterbein comeback to post a non-conference win on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
The win was the Bishops' sixth straight, tying the school-record season-opening winning streak set in 2006.
Ohio Wesleyan zoomed to a 5-1 lead, getting goals from freshman midfielder Amara Carlson (Dublin/Coffman), freshman midfielder Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette), and sophomore attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) to open the game. A Macey Buchanan goal put Otterbein on the scoreboard, but the Bishops countered with scores from Egan and Fleming to make it 5-1 just over a minute into the second quarter.
Sophomore attacker Sophia Staples-Roy (Hopkinton, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) each scored twice during the second quarter as Ohio Wesleyan took a 9-5 lead at the half. Fleming and Egan scored goals just 14 seconds apart midway through the third period, and Egan answered an Otterbein goal with a score just 36 seconds later for a 13-7 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter.
Otterbein's Emily Willms posted the final goal of the third period and Buchanan followed with a score just over a minute into the fourth quarter.
Willms rallied the Cardinals with 3 goals during the closing minutes, the last making it 13-12 with 1:25 remaining, but Ohio Wesleyan won the ensuing draw and was able to run out the clock.
Fleming led the Bishops with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Egan finished with 3 goals. Freshman Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) recorded 8 saves in the Bishop crease.
Willms scored 4 goals for Otterbein. Maggie Nance had 13 saves for the Cardinals.
