Ohio Wesleyan 2, Marietta 1
Ohio Wesleyan 5, Marietta 4
Sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Marietta in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader and give the Bishops a sweep of the twinbill on Tuesday at Margaret Sagan Field.
In the opener, sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) fired a 6-hitter and sophomore shortstop Sydney Hoover (Utica) knocked in the go-ahead run as the Bishops rallied for the win.
Ohio Wesleyan had built a 4-0 lead in the nightcap, with sophomore outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) smashing an RBI double in the second, sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) scoring an unearned run in the third, and freshman outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) delivering a 2-run double in the fourth.
With daylight waning, the Pioneers rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth, opening the inning with 5 consecutive hits, the last a game-tying double by Jess Brown. Perkins, on in relief, retired the next 3 hitters to get out of the inning without any further damage.
Freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic). Tuttle moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Cegledy's single through the left side, and the game was called because of darkness shortly thereafter.
Cegledy was 3-for-3 and scored twice for Ohio Wesleyan. Chittum allowed 6 hits over the first 4-plus innings, striking out 3 and walking one. Perkins was credited with the win in relief.
Amelia Timko was the losing pitcher in relief for Marietta.
Chittum and Marietta's Jillian Middleton traded zeroes for 4 innings in the opener, but the Pioneers broke the stalemate in the fifth. Anna Swierczewski led off with a single and pinch-runner Micaela Bradley advanced to second on a sacrifice. Maddy Jones followed with a comebacker to Chittum, who fired to third in an attempt to retire Bradley, but all runners were safe. Jones then took off for second, but Bias fired to third base behind the lead runner, with Bradley retired in a rundown. After making the tag on Bradley, Back appeared to tag Jones heading into third for what would have been an inning-ending double play, but Jones was ruled safe on the play and scored when Taylor Watts followed with an infield single.
Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning when freshman outfielder Lauren Kunzler (Lancaster) led off with a walk, moved to second on an infield out, stole third, and scored on Back's infield single.
The Bishops took the lead in the sixth as sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Cegledy followed with a single through the right side, with Anspach holding at third on the play, and Hoover lofted a fly ball to left center to plate Anspach with the go-ahead run.
Chittum retired the Pioneers in order in the top of the seventh to nail down the complete-game win, striking out 8 and walking one along the way. Back was 2-for-3 for the Bishops.
Middleton finished with a 4-hitter for Marietta.
