Freshman midfielder Amara Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored twice during the first quarter as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 6-0 run and went on to a non-conference win over Calvin on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
The win extended Ohio Wesleyan's school-record season-opening winning streak to 8 games.
Carlson opened the day's scoring at the 13:39 mark of the first quarter, and junior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman midfielder Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) followed with scores before sophomore attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) and Carlson rang up goals during the final minute of the period to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 5-0. Sophomore midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) converted a free-position shot during the opening minute of the second period to make it 6-0.
Kelly Ruha put the visitors on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, but senior attacker Taylor Floyd (Wilton, Conn.) answered with a score just 30 seconds after that, kicking off a 5-0 Bishop run that included 2 scores from junior midfielder Evie Williams (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) and a goal and 2 assists by Klabus.
Klabus and Fleming each added a pair of goals as the Bishops pulled away during the second half.
Klabus led the Bishops with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Fleming finished with 4 goals and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) made 3 saves during the first 50-plus minutes of play and sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Coontz (Dublin/Jerome) had 2 saves during the fourth quarter.
Megan Gilbert scored 2 goals for the Knights. Jessica Camp stopped 13 shots in the Calvin crease.
