Ohio Wesleyan 8, Albion 7
Freshman third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) drove in the winning run in the opener and plated the tying run during an 8-run fourth inning in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept a non-conference doubleheader from Albion on Friday at Littick Field.
The opener saw the Bishops get their first 3 batters on base as junior second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) led off with a single and senior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) and sophomore outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) followed with walks. Senior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) then chopped the ball back to Briton pitcher Scott Clippert, who threw to the plate for the first out. Albion catcher Matt McGann fired to first to try for the double play, but his throw went down the line, allowing Graham to score from second.
Albion answered with an RBI single by Austyn Stephens to even the game in the top of the second, but junior outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) led off the bottom of the second with a shot off the batter's eye in center for a 2-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead. The Britons knotted the score at 2 on an error by senior shortstop Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) in the top of the fourth.
Pershin led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. Brazytis followed with a single down the leftfield line, scoring Pershin.
Pershin went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored for Ohio Wesleyan. Sophomore righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) picked up the win with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Sean Cooper was the losing pitcher in relief for Albion.
The Britons took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on Stephens' 2-run homer to center in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bishops got their first 3 runners on when Spranger doubled and senior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) and senior catcher Lucas Stetter (Fort Collins, Colo.) followed with walks. Pershin drew a walk to force in a run, and Brazytis then singled home Russo with the tying run before Stetter scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Neff added an RBI single later in the inning and Spranger doubled home 2 runs to wrap up the 8-run uprising.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Zac Gray and Justin Charron brought the visitors within 8-4 in the fifth, and Albion rallied in the ninth, with Gray plating a run on a sacrifice fly and Stephens smashing a 2-run double to make it 8-7 before the game was called because of darkness.
Spranger was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Gavin Pulliam (Franklin, Tenn.) was the starting and winning pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Charlie Neel (Shaker Heights) was credited with a save.
Pete Loch was the starting and losing pitcher for Albion.
