Ohio Wesleyan 11, North Central 10
Senior attacker Henry Hasenberg (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) scored with :51 left in regulation time to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead for good, and the Bishops withstood a potential game-tying shot to record a win over North Central on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
Hasenberg's unassisted goal broke a 10-10 tie and gave the Bishops an 11-10 advantage. North Central won the ensuing face-off, and after the teams traded turnovers, the Cardinals had the ball with :06 remaining in regulation time. Tom Eberhardt put a shot on goal that freshman goalkeeper MacGuire Scholl (Upper Arlington) saved, and while North Central tracked down the loose ball, the Cardinals were not able to get off another shot.
Trailing, 5-4, at halftime, the Bishops opened the third quarter with goals by freshman midfielder Spencer Amacher (Blacksburg, Va./Blue Ridge School), freshman midfielder Joey Wiseman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), and senior midfielder Jack Damon (Portsmouth, R.I.) to go up, 7-5, early in the period. The teams traded goals 3 times over the next 17-plus minutes before North Central got scores by Luke Illgen and Jack Moran to even the game at 10 with 4:01 to play.
The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead on Joey D'Chuna's goal in the final minute of the first quarter, then extended the margin to 5-2 on scores by Eberhardt and Scott Allgood just 22 seconds apart early in the second quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 5-4 on scores by senior attacker Luke Swaddling (Strongsville/Lakewood St. Edward) and Hasenberg late in the second period.
Hasenberg led the Bishops with 4 goals and an assist. Swadding and Wiseman added 2 goals apiece. Scholl recorded 15 saves.
