Sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) drove in 3 runs and sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) belted 2 triples to lead the Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Bluffton outslugged the Bishops in their season opener on Monday in Leesburg, Fla.
In the Bishops' second game of the day, sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) scored to erase a 1-0 deficit, but Geneva rallied to take the win.
Bluffton jumped to a 3-0 first-inning lead on RBI singles from Lily Tate, Madison Jones, and Erin Norman.
Ohio Wesleyan got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Bias tripled and scored on a wild pitch, but the Beavers answered with 5 scores in the second, highlighted by Jones' 3-run triple, and added 2 more in the third.
The Bishops closed to within 10-5 in the fourth, with Bias tripling home a run and sophomore first baseman Tori Garey (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) doubling home 2 more. Anspach singled in a pair of runs during Ohio Wesleyan's 3-run fifth and singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Anspach was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, while Bias went 2-for-3 with 2 triples and freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory) was 2-for-2.
Freshman righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
Jones picked up the win in relief for Bluffton.
Geneva got its first 3 batters on base when Sarah Johnson, Madison Forsythe, and Madison Smith singled. Sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) got Peri Ceasri to fly out to right field, with freshman outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) throwing out Johnson trying to score on the play, but the Golden Tornadoes pushed a run across on Chittum's error on a ball off the bat of Nicole West.
The Bishops answered with a run in the top of the second as Cegledy led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch, then scored on a wild pitch.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the fifth when sophomore shortstop Sydney Hoover (Utica) reached on an error by Geneva shortstop Forsythe and Perkins reached on an error by Geneva pitcher Haley Smith. With runners on the corners, sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) grounded to second, scoring Hoover with the go-ahead run.
Geneva countered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by West's 2-run triple down the leftfield line.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 5-3 in the seventh as Perkins led off with a single and continued to third on Megan Gray's error in rightfield, then scored on Back's sacrifice fly, but Smith got out of the inning without any further damage.
Chittum was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
Smith finished with a 3-hitter for Geneva.
