Freshman midfielder Brady Hunt (Maineville/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and senior attacker Henry Hasenberg (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) opened the second half with goals to give Ohio Wesleyan an 8-6 lead, but Roanoke scored the next 4 goals and went on a non-conference win over the Bishops on Tuesday in Salem, Va.
Wyatt Whitlow and Luke Kammerman had scored goals during the final 90 seconds of the first half to knot the game at 6 heading into the intermission, but Hunt scored at the 10:59 mark of the third quarter and Hasenberg rang up an unassisted goal midway through the period for an 8-6 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
The Maroons then scored 4 goals during a stretch of 3 minutes, with Sean Kennedy, Quinn Evans, George Gilbert, and Luca Docking recording scores to put the hosts up, 10-8.
Senior attacker Luke Swaddling (Strongsville/Lakewood St. Edward) scored just 28 seconds later to end that Roanoke run, but the Maroons got scores by Ethan Caldwell and Gilbert to close out the third period with a 12-9 lead.
Senior attacker Will Anton (Madison, N.J.) scored midway through the fourth quarter to make it a 12-10 game, but Kammerman got that goal back for the 13-10 final.
The Bishops had assembled a 3-0 run on goals by Swaddling, freshman midfielder Joey Wiseman (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), and senior defenseman Joe Connor (Barrie, Ontario/Everest Academy) for a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter, but Roanoke got back-to-back goals by Whitlow to knot the score at 4.
Hasenberg led Ohio Wesleyan with 3 goals. Freshman goalkeeper MacGuire Scholl (Upper Arlington) recorded 17 saves in the Bishop crease.
Gilbert had 3 goals and an assist for Roanoke. Taylor Lewis finished with 12 saves for the Maroons.
