Sophomore outfielder Brooke Hoffman (Oregon/Toledo St. Ursula) scored the go-ahead run during a 3-run fifth-inning rally, and sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) worked 6.1 scoreless innings in relief to help Ohio Wesleyan defeat Plymouth State on Tuesday in Leesburg, Fla.

In Tuesday's opener, sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) and sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) scored runs in the top of the seventh to bring the Bishops within 7-6, but Heidelberg held on for the win.

Plymouth State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a 2-run triple by Mia Ly.  Chittum came on in relief and got out of the inning, and the Bishops got the runs back in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Bias and freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory).

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the fifth as sophomore first baseman Tori Garey (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) led off with a single and Hoffman came in to pinch-run.  Sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) reached on an error by Panther pitcher Sam McCann, eventually checking in at third on the play as Hoffman scored.  After freshman outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) was hit by a pitch, Back scored and Panozzo moved to second on a passed ball, and Panozzo took third on another passed ball before scoring on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Chittum was in command, allowing only 2 runners past first base during the final 6.0 innings.  Chittum struck out 3 and walked none en route to the win.

McCann was the starting and losing pitcher for Plymouth State.

In Tuesday's opener, Heidelberg took a 4-0 first-inning lead with the help of Gabbie Stallbaum's bases-clearing double.

Ohio Wesleyan halved the deficit in the top of the second on an RBI single by freshman righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) and a run-scoring double by sophomore outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.), but Heidelberg got those runs back in the bottom of the inning on Emma Dean's 2-run single.

The Bishops closed to within 6-4 in the fourth on Back's RBI single.

Trailing, 7-4, heading into the seventh, Ohio Wesleyan opened the inning with singles by Bias and Cegledy to bring the tying run to the plate.  After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Heidelberg pitcher Peyton Scheid bounced back to retire Tuttle on strikes and sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) on an infield popup.  Another wild pitch scored both runners before Scheid got the final out.

Back was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Freshman righthander Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops, and Rodriguez allowed 3 hits over the final 6.0 innings.

Maggie Hoffman was the winning pitcher in relief for Heidelberg, and Scheid was credited with a save.
