Sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) singled home a pair of runs to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) fired a 3-hitter as the Bishops defeated Wittenberg in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Springfield.

In the opener, the Bishops rallied from a 3-0 deficit to even the score at 3, but the Tigers pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the third inning of the nightcap when freshman outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) led off with a single.  One out later, sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) reached on an error by Tiger pitcher Kira van Ravensberg, and the runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice by freshman outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen).  Back delivered a single to score both runners for a 2-0 Bishop lead, then stole second and scored on an error by Wittenberg shortstop Nikki Hawkins.

That would be more than enough for Chittum, who yielded a pair of second-inning singles but did not allow another baserunner until the seventh inning, mowing down 14 straight Tiger hitters during one stretch.

In the seventh, Clara Anderson lined a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hanna Ecker.  Hawkins walked to bring the tying run to the plate, but Chittum got Lexi Williams to pop up to end the game.

Back was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Bishops.  Chittum struck out 4 and walked one in working the complete game.

van Ravensberg finished with a 3-hitter for Wittenberg.

The Tigers rapped out 5 hits in the first inning of the opener, including RBI singles by Elise Freeland and Ecker, and Ecker singled home another run in the third to make it 3-0.

Freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) led off the fourth with a single, took second on an infield out, moved to third on a single by sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman), and scored on a wild pitch.

After 2 were out in the top of the sixth, sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) reached on an error by Tiger third baseman Freeland, and after Anspach singled, freshman infielder Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) reached on an error by Wittenberg second baseman Harper Crews to load the bases.  Panozzo then reached on an error by Crews, with Cegledy and Anspach scoring on the play.

With one out In the bottom of the seventh, Wittenberg's Julia Burch sent a roller down the third-base line.  Back picked up the ball off the line but the throw to first was off the mark, with Burch checking in at second on the play.  Burch moved to third on an infield out, and Andersen laid down a bunt to the left of the circle and beat the throw to first, with Burch scoring the winning run.

Anspach went 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.  Chittum pitched the complete game for the Bishops.

Samantha Zungril tossed a 5-hitter for the Tigers.
