Junior second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) and sophomore outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) drove in 2 runs apiece as Ohio Wesleyan took a 9-0 lead, and freshman righthander Josh Ferreira (Raynham, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey (R.I.) scattered 7 hits over the first 7.0 innings as the Bishops defeated Defiance on Thursday at Littick Field.
With runners on the corners and one down in the bottom of the first inning, Neff took off for second, but the pitch got past Yellow Jacket catcher Jesse Giraud, with senior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) scoring and Neff checking in at third on the play. Neff would score on an infield out off the bat of senior catcher Lucas Stetter (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain), and the Bishops added another run on a double by sophomore outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) and a single by sophomore first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley).
Graham plated a run with a sacrifice fly before a 2-run homer by Neff in the second, and Stefancin lined a 2-run double and scored on a single by senior third baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) in the third.
Defiance got on the scoreboard in the sixth on Nate Kaffenberger's 2-out single, a wild pitch, and a pair of Bishop errors.
The Bishops ended the game after 2 were down in the eighth. Graham singled and Neff followed with a walk, and senior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) drew a walk to fill the bases. Graham scored on an error by Defiance shortstop Gunner Gregg, and Ysseldyke drew a walk to force home Neff with a run that made it 11-1, ending the game.
Neff and Ysseldyke each went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Bishops. Ferreira pitched the first 7.0 innings, striking out 7 and walking none, to collect the win.
Tyler Sickmiller was the starting and losing pitcher for Defiance.
