Senior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) slammed 2 home runs to power Ohio Wesleyan past Oberlin in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Oberlin.
In the opener, Russo drove in a run to put the Bishops on the scoreboard, but the Yeomen went on to take the win.
Trailing, 1-0, after the first inning of the nightcap, the Bishops pushed across 6 runs in the second to take the lead for good. Junior outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) and senior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) were hit by pitches to open the inning, and senior shortstop Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) and freshman shortstop Josh Ferreira (Raynham, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey (R.I.) delivered RBI singles to give the Bishops the lead, and senior catcher Ralph Good (Marble, Colo./Roaring Fork) lofted a fly ball to score Spranger. One out later, senior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) singled to reload the bases and junior second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) drew a walk to force home Padilla. Pershin then delivered a 2-run single to plate Graham and Ferreira.
Russo smashed a grand slam in the third to increase the Bishop lead to 10-2, and Ohio Wesleyan added 2 runs in the fourth with the help of Good's bases-loaded walk and 2 more in the fifth, with Ferreira contributing a sacrifice fly.
Russo led off the top of the sixth with a homer down the rightfield line, making him the first Ohio Wesleyan player to homer twice in a game since May 1, 2019, when Zack Stiteler went deep twice at Hiram.
Russo went 5-for-7 with 5 RBI, and Graham was 3-for-7, with both players tying the Ohio Wesleyan single-game record for at-bats. Pershin was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Spranger and Padilla each scored 4 runs.
Sophomore righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) scattered 4 hits over the last 5.2 innings to record the win.
William Kennedy was the starting and losing pitcher for Oberlin.
The opener saw the Yeomen erupt for 5 first-inning runs as Jake Freed drilled a 2-run double and Max Anastasio doubled home another run.
Ohio Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit, with Russo singling in a run in the fourth and Neff plating a run in the seventh to make it a 6-2 game, but the Yeomen answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the seventh, capped by Chris Wolfe's 2-run homer.
Russo was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Gavin Pulliam (Franklin, Tenn.) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
