Senior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll), sophomore shortstop Blake Farley (Hudson), sophomore catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)), and senior third baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) knocked in runs to give Ohio Wesleyan a 4-0 lead, but Denison rallied for a win in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Granville.
In the opener, the Big Red built a 12-0 lead and went on to the win.
Sophomore first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) opened the second inning of the nightcap by reaching on an error by Big Red shortstop Owen Wilson and moving to second on an infield out. Freshman outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) and Withrow followed with singles to plate Ysseldyke. Farley then reached on an infield single, scoring Stoner, and Monaco's infield out plated Withrow before Russo wrapped up the inning with a single to score Farley.
Denison answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring 4 runs with the help of an RBI triple by Dylan Hunter, and got a grand slam from Eric Colaco in the third.
Russo crushed a 2-run homer in the top of the seventh to bring the Bishops within 9-7, but the Big Red scored 4 times in the bottom of the inning, capped by a 2-run single from Jake Welsch.
Stoner was 4-for-4 and scored 3 runs for Ohio Wesleyan, and Withrow was 3-for-4. Freshman righthander Josh Ferreira (Raynham, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey (R.I.)) was charged with the loss in relief.
Taylor Perrett pitched the first 5.0 innings to record the win for Denison.
Denison took the lead in the opener on a 3-run homer by Danny Alvarez in the first and scored 6 times in the second, with Colaco hitting a solo homer and Josh Bohn and Wilson each adding a 2-run double. The hosts got run-scoring doubles from Welsch and Daniel Spencer during a 3-run third.
Junior outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and senior shortstop Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had an RBI double later in the inning, and in the Ohio Wesleyan sixth, senior catcher Ralph Good (Marble, Colo./Roaring Fork) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and freshman third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) and Withrow drew bases-loaded walks.
Stoner went 2-for-3 for the Bishops. Senior righthander Gavin Pulliam (Franklin, Tenn.) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
Trey Holland pitched the first 5.0 innings to receive the win for Denison.
