Ohio Wesleyan 1, Wooster 0
Wooster 9, Ohio Wesleyan 8
Sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) drove in the game's only run and sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) fired a 2-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Margaret Sagan Field.
In the nightcap, sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) drove in 4 runs to help the Bishops rally to send the game into extra innings, but Wooster pushed across a run in the top of the 10th to salvage a split.
The Bishops gave Chittum the only run she would need in the first inning of the opener. Freshman outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) led off with a double and sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) followed with a single and moved to second on the throw to third. Freshman shortstop McKenna Tuttle (Richmond, Ky./Model Laboratory School) drew a walk to fill the sacks with nobody out before Cegledy was retired on a liner to right. Anspach lofted a fly ball to right to score Panozzo, but Back was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play.
Chittum worked out of a jam in the second when Kaydee Clark led off with a walk and Lilly McClendon followed with a single, and a sacrifice put runners on second and third with one out, recording the second out when Clark was caught off third base on a bunt attempt and getting Anna Norby on a popup to end the inning.
The Scots threatened in the seventh as Molly Likins led off with a walk and Katie Agatucci reached on an error by sophomore catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic). After the runners moved up on a sacrifice, Chittum retired Gabby Lakes on a popup and Destany Blake on an infield grounder to end the game.
Chittum struck out 5 and walked 2 in the 2-hit shutout, the Bishops' first 2-hitter since a Madi Drabick 2-hitter against Denison on March 31, 2018.
Addie Tagg finished with a 3-hitter in pitching the complete game for Wooster.
The nightcap saw the visitors take the lead on Blake's RBI single in the second and add 4 runs in the third with the help of a 2-run double by Agatucci.
Singles by Panozzo and Tuttle preceded a 3-run homer by Cegledy in the bottom of the third, but Wooster countered with 3 runs in the fifth, getting a 2-run single by Sarah Lodge in the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning, getting a sacrifice fly by Anspach and taking advantage of 3 Wooster errors in the frame. The Bishops finished the comeback in the sixth, tying the game on a double by Back, a single by Cegledy, and a single by Anspach.
In the top of the 10th, Lodge was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice, and Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez followed with a grounder to Tuttle to plate Lodge with the go-ahead run.
Sophomore outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) was placed on second to start the bottom of the inning and took third on a passed ball with none down. Bias grounded to Norby at first base for the first out of the inning, and Panozzo followed with a grounder to third, with Moore, running on contact, thrown out at the plate on the play before Back fouled out to end the contest.
Anspach was 3-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan, while Back, Tuttle, and Cegledy each went 2-for-5, with Cegledy scoring 3 runs and driving in 4. Freshman righthander Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.), who came on in relief in the third and pitched 8.0 innings, was charged with the loss.
Daphne Pate, the third of 3 Wooster pitchers, was the winner in relief.
