by Michaela Alfano '25
Sophomore midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) scored as Ohio Wesleyan pulled ahead with 3:47 remaining in regulation time and went on to defeat Allegheny in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
DelGallo had converted a free-position shot to give the Bishops a 15-13 lead with 5:37 left, but Allegheny got goals from Senna Perelman and Liz Dolan less than a minute apart to even the score at 15.
After DelGallo's go-ahead score, the Gators had a look at the equalizer when Perelman lined up for a free-position shot with 2:22 remaining, but her shot hit the side of the goal and the Bishops were able to hold on to the ball for most of the remaining 2-plus minutes.
Emily Herrold opened up the day's scoring, getting Allegheny on the board just a few minutes into the action. Junior midfielder Caroline Kiker (Shaker Heights) was able to respond for the Bishops, adding her own goal just over a minute later. That pattern would repeat itself often, with the teams trading goals 10 times over the first 37-plus minutes.
Allegheny put together a 3-0 run during the third period, with Perelman scoring twice, as the Gators went up 12-10 for the biggest lead of the game to that point. Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 3-0 run that included a pair of goals by junior midfielder Evie Williams (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) to take a 13-12 lead early in the fourth quarter. Goals by Williams and DelGallo gave the Bishops a 15-13 lead heading into the final minutes.
Eight different Bishops were able to score. Williams scored 6 goals to lead Ohio Wesleyan and freshman midfielder Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) added 2 goals and 2 assists.
Perelman led the charge for Allegheny, scoring 5 on the day, and Grace Baginski was close behind with 4 of her own.
The Bishops outshot the Gators, 42-32. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) finished with 11 saves for Ohio Wesleyan and Sarah Thorman made 18 saves for Allegheny.
