Sophomore second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) delivered a walk-off single to knock in the winning run in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Denison on Saturday at Margaret Sagan Field.
In the nightcap, freshman outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) scored twice as the Bishops took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning, but Denison's Jessica Hopkins sliced an opposite-field, 2-run homer for a 3-2 lead and the Big Red salvaged a split.
Denison had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opener on a 2-run triple from Claire Powell.
The Bishops closed to within 2-1 on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) in the fourth, but the Big Red got the run back in the fifth on Hopkins' run-scoring single.
Cegledy led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, and after a walk to Anspach, the runners moved up on a wild pitch. Freshman outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) followed with a single, scoring Cegledy, with Anspach coming in to score when Denison rightfielder Clara Wolff threw wildly to first base.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) singled with one out, then moved to second on a sacrifice. Cegledy followed with a single up the middle to score Back and end the game.
Back and Cegledy each went 3-for-4 for the Bishops, while Perkins finished at 2-for-3. Sophomore lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 3 and walking none.
Sydney Silverstein pitched the complete game for Denison.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the first inning of the nightcap as Panozzo led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a single by Cegledy, and scored on a wild pitch.
Panozzo was hit by a pitch to lead off the third, then stole second, took third on a passed ball, and scored on Cegledy's single.
The visitors closed to within 2-1 in the fourth on an RBI double by Jacqui Abogado, then took the lead in the seventh on Hopkins' 2-run homer to left.
Sophia Parpala retired the Bishops in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the complete-game win.
Cegledy was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Chittum pitched the complete game for the Bishops.
