Wooster's Caitlyn O'Connor scored at the horn in overtime to give the Fighting Scots a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
After gaining possession in their defensive end with :15 left in the extra session, the Scots cleared the ball and got a shot from Syd Schuster. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Markowitz (Las Vegas, Nev./Somerset Academy) made the save, but O'Connor got to the loose ball and swept it into the Bishop net to give the visitors the win.
Wooster had taken an early lead on a score by Hannah Shaw, but Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 4 goals, with freshman midfielder Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) and sophomore attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) each contributing a goal and an assist. The teams would trade goals for most of the rest of the first half, but Wooster got scores from Syd Schuster and Kenzie Morris during the final :21 of the half to pull within 8-7, then got the equalizer from Schuster early in the third quarter.
Caitlyn O'Connor and Ciara O'Connor scored goals :20 apart to put Wooster up, 10-9, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with scores from Fleming and senior attacker Taylor Floyd (Wilton, Conn.) to retake the lead at 11-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
Shaw scored a pair of goals as the Fighting Scots took a 12-11 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Klabus converted a free-position shot to knot the game at 12 with 5:29 left in regulation time.
Both teams had a chance to win during the final seconds of regulation. The Bishops had the ball coming out of a timeout with :31 to play, but Ciara O'Connor dislodged the ball from sophomore midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass.) and Wooster headed the other way. In the closing seconds, junior midfielder Evie Williams (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown School) caused a turnover by Ciara O'Connor, with Markowitz collecting the ground ball to send the game into overtime.
The extra session was more of the same, with each team having chances to take the win only to see the other make a defensive play to keep the game going until the final horn.
