Verdugo Highlights Men's Track & Field at Marv Frye Invite

Senior Joey Verdugo (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Upper Sandusky (Ohio)) won an event for Ohio Wesleyan at the Marv Frye at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at the George Gauthier Track and Selby Stadium.

Albion won the meet with 142 points to 127½ for Calvin.  Wilmington finished third with 111 points, followed by Denison (105), Bluffton (51), Ohio Wesleyan (40), Kenyon (33), Muskingum (27), Baldwin Wallace (23), Mount St. Joseph (22), Marietta (19½), Heidelberg (15), Capital (11), and Ohio Christian (0).

Verdugo won the pole vault with a performance of 14-1¼.

Other standouts for the Bishops included senior Cooper Berry (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug), who tied for second in the pole vault; freshman Coleman Kegler (Columbus/Upper Arlington), who placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles; junior Clay Sturts (Lexington), who was fifth in the javelin; junior Wyatt Wells (Marion/Pleasant), who finished sixth in the pole vault; freshman Mason Myers (Perrysburg/Hillsdale), who placed seventh in the triple jump; sophomore Dylan Liggett (Medina), who was eighth in the 100-meter dash; junior Jacob Bauer (Hilliard/Davidson), who placed eighth in the 400-meter dash; freshman Wes Horton (Columbus/Thomas Worthington), who finished eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase; and freshman Trey Theobald (Archbold), who was eighth in the javelin.

The Bishop 1600-meter relay team of Theobald, Bauer, freshman Trey Good (Marysville/Fairbanks), and junior Zach Murrey (Logan) finished fourth.

The Marv Frye Invitational honors the longtime Battling Bishop mentor, who coached the Ohio Wesleyan men's track & field team from 1961-97. Frye also coached men's cross country, women's track & field, and women's cross country during his time at Ohio Wesleyan, and remains active in the central Ohio track & field community.
