Ohio Wesleyan 2, DePauw 0
Freshman midfielder Alyssa Markell (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and senior midfielder Veronica Hardman (Blenheim, New Zealand/Ravenswood) scored goals and the Ohio Wesleyan defense tied a school record with its fifth straight shutout in a non-conference win over North Coast Athletic Conference rival DePauw on Sunday at Selby Stadium.
The win was the fifth in as many outings for Ohio Wesleyan, giving the Bishops their first 5-0 start since 1980.
Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard after earning a penalty corner early in the second quarter. Junior forward Allie Crawford (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) fired a shot that was blocked by the Tiger defense, and freshman forward Olivia Danley (Del Rio, Texas/Independence (Va.)) got to the loose ball, but her shot was stopped by DePauw keeper Bella Lauber. The ball got past a Tiger defender to Markell near the right post, and Markell knocked it home at the 12:39 mark of the period.
Hardman provided some insurance early in the fourth quarter. After another penalty corner, junior forward Emily Streeter (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) had a shot stopped by DePauw keeper Scarlett Oaks. Hardman got the loose ball and fired a shot that Oaks stopped as well, but Hardman followed the shot and scored on the putback with 10:53 left in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot DePauw, 18-2. Sophomore Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) had 1 save in the Bishop cage.
