Senior José Mancilla (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Tecnologico de Monterrey) and freshman Rainer Holl (Williamstown, W.Va.) recorded singles wins for Ohio Wesleyan during the first day of the Big Red Invitational, hosted by Denison University on Saturday in Granville.
Mancilla defeated Spencer Surles of Capital, 6-4, 6-4, while Holl was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Jack Bowers of Wooster.
In further singles action, Holl lost to Castro of Ohio Northern, 6-1, 6-4; Mancilla lost to Sam Sran of Ohio Northern, 6-4, 6-2; junior Jeremy Dao (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/Le Hong Phong) lost to Peyton Specht of Ohio Northern by scores of 6-0, 6-1; Jackson Havel of Capital defeated freshman Samuel Gadkar (Lewis Center/Olentangy Berlin), 6-1, 6-3; Jesse Stevens of Capital defeated Dao, 6-1, 6-1; and Walker Wood of Wooster defeated Gadkar, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, Holl and Mancilla defeated Havel and Brady Wink of Capital by an 8-2 count, while Ohio Northern's Sran and Castro defeated Dao and Gadkar by an 8-0 score.
The Big Red Invitational is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
