Wittenberg 56, Ohio Wesleyan 49

Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) helped Ohio Wesleyan narrow a 10-point deficit to a 3-point margin, but Wittenberg withstood the rally and went on to a win in a battle of North Coast Athletic Conference unbeatens on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wittenberg had taken a 47-37 lead on back-to-back buckets by Molly Scott early in the fourth quarter, and the Tigers still led, 52-45, after a 3-pointer from Kelsey Ragan with 3:58 left in regulation time.

Schipfer drained a pair of free throws at the 2:29 mark  and followed with a jumper with 1:37 remaining to make it 52-49, then blocked a shot by Wittenberg's Jade Simpson with 1:06 left, with junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) controlling the rebound to set up a potential game-tying possession for the Bishops.

Jazmyn Gaines-Burns stole the ball back for the Tigers, and after a couple of Ohio Wesleyan fouls to get into the bonus, Wittenberg's Evie Wolshire went to the line with :37 remaining.  Wolshire missed both free throws, but the rebound of the second shot went out of bounds to Wittenberg, and the Tigers used most of the shot clock on the ensuing possession before Taryn Cash drove the left baseline for a lay-in that extended the lead to 54-49 with :09 to go.  Wolshire sank a pair of free throws in the final second to account for the 56-49 final.

Schipfer opened the evening's scoring with a pair of free throws, but Wittenberg built a 10-4 lead with the help of 3-pointers from Wolshire and Ragan.  Ohio Wesleyan evened the score at 19 on a Schipfer jumper midway through the second quarter, and pulled ahead, 25-24, on a pair of Schipfer free throws early in the third period.  The Tigers retook the lead with an 8-0 burst that included a pair of 3-pointers by Ragan, and a 6-0 Wittenberg run early in the fourth quarter stretched the lead to 47-37.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 25 points and 10 rebounds.  Homan recorded a team-best 4 assists.
