Junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored 6 points during an 11-4 run that opened up a double-digit lead as Ohio Wesleyan pulled away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday in Oberlin.
Oberlin opened the fourth quarter with a 3-point play by Angela Kumler and a jumper from Camille Zinaich to close within 51-48, but Denison answered with a hoop on the Bishops' next possession, and after a 3-pointer by freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy), Denison scored twice more as the Bishops stretched the margin to 62-52 with 4:32 remaining.
The Yeowomen closed to within 64-56 on Alyson Jefferson's lay-in with 3:45 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 7 points, with a 3-point play by junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) closing out the run and giving the Bishops a 71-56 lead with 1:07 to play.
Oberlin took an early 5-0 lead on a Gina Lombard 3-pointer, but a 17-4 Ohio Wesleyan run that included a trifecta of 3-pointers by Denison put the Bishops ahead, 17-9. The Yeowomen retook the lead at 21-20 early in the second period, and extended the lead to 30-24 on a Jaedyn O'Reilly 3-pointer, only to see Denison connect on 3-pointers just 23 seconds apart to even the score at 30.
The Bishops closed out the third quarter with an 11-0 run, with junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) finishing off the run with a 3-pointer while the Bishops held Oberlin scoreless for the final 5:55 of the period to take a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Denison led the Bishops with a career-high 30 points. Sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) scored 16 points, Schipfer finished with 11 points and shared the team lead with 6 rebounds, and Homan shared the team lead with 6 rebounds and collected a team-high 9 assists.
