Women's Basketball Defeats Denison

Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) converted a 3-point play and junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) drained a 3-pointer during a 10-2 run that opened up a double-digit lead, and Ohio Wesleyan went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Wednesday in Granville.

It was a one-possession game for most of the first 28 minutes of play, with the Bishops going up by 4 once during the first quarter and opening up leads of 4 and 5 points during the second period.

Denison was within 24-22 after Brooke Toigo made the second of 2 free throws with 3:19 left in the first half when the Bishops went on their 10-2 run.  Baskets by sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) and sophomore guard Avery Maxeiner (Sunbury/Big Walnut) started things off, then Schipfer converted a 3-point play and Denison closed out the run with a 3-pointer that made it 34-24.

The Big Red closed to within 34-26 at the intermission, but Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with 7 straight points, beginning the period with a 3-pointer from junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) before hoops from Schipfer and sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) extended the lead to 41-26, and the margin would remain in double digits throughout the remainder of the contest.

Homan led the Bishops with a career-high 20 points and 3 assists.  Schipfer scored 17 points, Denison finished with 12 points, and Ross added 11 points.  Griner had a team-high 8 rebounds.
