Ohio Wesleyan 66, Hiram 47

Junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored 5 points during an early 13-0 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Saturday in Hiram.

Maddie Rakestraw's lay-in gave Hiram a lead in the opening minute of the game, but lay-ins by sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) soon put the Bishops ahead to stay.

Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) followed with a steal and lay-in before Denison knocked down a 3-pointer, and hoops by Griner and Denison gave Ohio Wesleyan a 13-2 lead at the 6:38 mark of the opening period.

The Terriers closed to within 13-8 on a pair of Brooke Hickman free throws later in the quarter, and it was still a 15-10 game after Hiram's Lizzy Scharer hit a pair of free throws with 1:44 remaining.

Griner closed out the first-quarter scoring with a lay-in, and the Bishops opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run, with Griner scoring 3 buckets during that stretch.  Ohio Wesleyan held Hiram without a basket until the 4:19 mark of the quarter and yielded only 5 points during the period on the way to a 35-15 lead at the break, and the lead would remain in double figures throughout the remainder of the contest.

Griner led the Bishops with 18 points.  Denison finished with 14 points, Schipfer scored 12 points and collected a team-high 5 assists, and junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) grabbed a team-best 6 rebounds.
