Senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) led a quartet of double-figure scorers and Ohio Wesleyan set a pair of school records as the Bishops defeated Pitt-Greensburg in the first round of the Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College on Friday in Washington, Pa.
UP-G's Malina Boord sank a 3-pointer to give the Panthers an early lead, but the Bishops responded with a 10-0 run that featured 2 baskets by Schipfer and hoops from senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and freshman post Macy Miller (Marysville/Fairbanks). Another Denison bucket stretched the lead into double digits at 15-5, and after another Miller basket, Ohio Wesleyan would lead by a 19-8 count after the opening quarter.
Junior post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and Schipfer opened the second quarter with baskets to stretch the lead to 23-8. Madison Scalese knocked down a jumper from the lane for the Panthers, but Ohio Wesleyan would finish the period on a 19-0 run to take a 42-10 lead at the intermission. The 2 points allowed by the Bishops during the quarter broke the school record of 4 set at Waynesburg on Dec. 17, 2021.
The Bishops pulled away during the second half, with the eventual 69-point margin of victory breaking the previous neutral-court mark of 47 set in a 100-53 win over Albion on Dec. 29, 1994.
Schipfer led Ohio Wesleyan with 17 points. Miller followed with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and shared the team lead with 7 boards. Griner scored 14 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds. Junior guard Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) added 11 points. Senior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) led the Bishops with 6 assists.
