Senior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) buried a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 58-57, but Washington & Jefferson withstood a potential game-winning possession to take a win in the second round of the Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday in Washington, Pa.
The Presidents had taken a 58-50 lead on a 3-pointer by Bryn Bezjak with 3:16 left in regulation time.
Senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) sank a pair of free throws with 2:41 remaining, then stole the ball to set up a jumper by senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) with 1:55 to go. After Schipfer cleared a defensive rebound, Denison fed Homan for a 3-pointer to make it a 58-57 game with 1:06 remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan got the ball back after an offensive foul on W&J's Stellanie Loutsion with :44 to go, but Schipfer missed a jumper. Junior post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) got the offensive rebound, but a jumper by Denison was off the mark, and the ball went out of bounds to the Bishops. Schipfer lined up a jumper with :07 remaining but was off-target, and the ball went to the Presidents.
Neither team led by more than 3 points during the first quarter, but the Bishops broke a 15-15 tie with an 8-0 second-quarter run, collecting a Ross jumper, a Denison 3-pointer, and a Schipfer 3-point play, and Ohio Wesleyan would take a 34-26 lead into the locker room. W&J opened the third quarter with a 16-3 run that included 5 points by Adalynn Cherry, and the Presidents opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 burst that saw 3-pointers from Bezjak and Meghan Dryburgh and stretched the margin to 53-44.
Schipfer led the Bishops with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Denison finished with 13 points, Ross scored 12, and Homan had a team-best 4 assists.
