Senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored 5 points and junior post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) tallied 4 during an 11-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a non-conference win over 22nd-ranked Marietta on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Pioneers had taken a 3-2 lead on a 3-pointer by Olivia Gribble 2 minutes into the action, but Griner answered with a hoop on the other end just seconds later to give the Bishops the lead for good. After a Marietta turnover, Griner added a lay-in just 23 seconds after the previous basket, and Denison followed with a jumper and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a jumper by senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) for a 13-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead midway through the first quarter.
Sophomore guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) added a jumper and a 3-pointer to help the Bishops extend the lead to 25-9, and Denison opened the second quarter with a jumper for a 29-11 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Marietta rallied during the second quarter, putting together an 11-2 stretch that included another Gribble 3-pointer and a trio of lay-ins by Hannah Schill, with the last of those bringing the visitors within 34-25 with 3:25 remaining in the half.
The Pioneers opened the second-half scoring with a lay-in from Makenzie Wilson to pull within 40-30 at the 9:23 mark, but Marietta would not score again for more than 8 minutes. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 20 straight points, with Schipfer scoring 8 of those. Denison ended the run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to give the Bishops a 60-30 lead with 1:43 left in the quarter, and Ohio Wesleyan would lead by at least 20 points throughout the remainder of the contest.
Denison led the Bishops with 24 points, going 6-for-10 from long distance. Schipfer added 20 points and shared the team lead with 7 boards, Griner scored 11 points, junior post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) shared the lead with 7 rebounds, and senior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) collected a game-high 9 assists.
