Denison's Emma Gebhart scored with 3:01 remaining in the first overtime period to give second-seeded Denison a win over top-seeded Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
Tabitha Chandler made a run into the circle and fired a shot that junior Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, Conn.) saved. The ball was cleared toward the top of the circle, but Gebhart kept the ball inside the circle and chipped a high shot over McCarthy and into the cage for the game-winner.
Ohio Wesleyan had a 6-0 advantage in shots during the first half, but Denison keeper Athena Joannou recorded 2 saves and Big Red defender Grace Lock stopped another shot.
Denison's shot came in the 44th minute, with Gebhart's drive stopped by McCarthy.
Both teams had chances during the fourth quarter. Senior forward Allie Crawford (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) had a shot stopped by Joannou in the 51st minute. In the 58th minute, Chandler had a pair of shots, with the first stopped by McCarthy and the second by sophomore defender Ellie Conroy (Worthington/Thomas Worthington).
Denison had another pair of rapid-fire shots early in the overtime period, but McCarthy denied both shots by Flanagan in the 62nd minute.
