Senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored 7 points as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 20-1 run and went on to a non-conference win over Defiance in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday in Defiance.
Senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) buried a 3-pointer on the season's initial possession, and after Defiance's Zadria King split a pair of free throws, Schipfer knocked down a pair from the line. Junior Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) followed with a pair of fast-break hoops, and junior post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and Schipfer followed with buckets to increase the margin to 12-1. A jumper by sophomore guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy), a Schipfer 3-point play, and a hoop from freshman post Macy Miller (Marysville/Fairbanks) made it a 20-1 game with 3:45 remaining in the quarter.
King hit a jumper and Taylor Bates added a pair of free throws to finish off the period for the Yellow Jackets, but the Bishops pulled away with an 18-1 run during the second quarter, with Denison and Semptimphelter draining 3-pointers and Schipfer turning in back-to-back steal-and-lay-ins to kick off the run.
Ohio Wesleyan added 31 points during the third quarter, breaking the school record of 28 set at Hiram on March 21, 2021, and the Bishops' 101 points on the night marked the first time that Ohio Wesleyan surpassed the 100-point mark in a road game since Feb. 18, 1995, when the Bishops won by a 103-34 count at Oberlin.
