Senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) scored Ohio Wesleyan's first 5 points and senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) tallied 9 points during a game-opening 23-3 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win over Eastern Connecticut State at the Cruzin Classic on Sunday at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Denison sank a lay-in and followed with a 3-pointer to give the Bishops a 5-0 lead, but the Warriors got a 3-point play by Nevaeh Clark to pull within 5-3.
Junior post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) converted a 3-point play and Schipfer followed with a fast-break lay-in before a jumper by freshman post Macy Miller (Marysville/Fairbanks) and a Schipfer 3-point play extended the margin to double digits at 15-3 at the midway point of the first quarter. Miller followed with a jumper from the lane before 4 Schipfer free throws and a lay-in by sophomore guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) gave the Bishops a 23-3 lead with :41 left in the period.
Taylor Salato sank a pair of free throws to end ECSU's 7-plus-minute scoring drought, but Denison knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during the second quarter to stretch the lead to 20 points, and the Bishops pulled away during the second half.
Denison led the Bishops with 20 points, while Schipfer finished with 13. Ross collected 10 rebounds and senior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) was credited with 4 assists.
