Ohio Wesleyan 68, Albion 56
Senior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) tallied 6 points during an 11-1 fourth-quarter run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a win over Albion during the second day of the Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope tournament, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
After Albion tied the game at 50 on a fast-break lay-in by Brazyll Watkins, senior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) sank a pair of free throws to put the Bishops up for good. Denison followed with a 3-point play, then knocked down a 3-pointer before a 3-point play by junior post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) made it 61-51 with 4:33 left in regulation time.
Watkins kept the Britons within striking distance, twice scoring to bring the visitors with 8 points, but that was as close as Albion would come.
Albion broke a 6-6 tie with hoops by Emma Cooke and Watkins before an Ava Guilford 3-pointer opened up a 13-6 lead midway through the opening quarter. Lolo Reed scored back-to-back buckets from the lane to open the second quarter and give the Britons a 23-15 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a 16-2 run that opened with 4 straight points from Schipfer and included a pair of jumpers by Griner before a Denison 3-pointer capped the run and gave the Bishops a 31-25 advantage.
The Bishops led by as many as 7 during the third quarter, but the Britons pulled even early in the fourth period on a putback by Daniah Beavers and Watkins' fast-break lay-in with 8:06 to go.
Denison led Ohio Wesleyan with 18 points, while Griner added 15 and Schipfer finished with 14. Junior post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and senior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) led the Bishops with 9 assists.
