DePauw Defeats Women's Basketball in Overtime

Junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) hit baskets that gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead early in the overtime period, but DePauw rallied for a win in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday in Greencastle, Ind.

The Ohio Wesleyan hoops, sandwiched around a free throw by DePauw's Mya Shannon, gave the Bishops a 59-56 lead just under 90 seconds into the extra session.

DePauw countered by scoring the next 6 points, with Shannon hitting a pair of free throws and knocking down a jumper, but the Bishops closed to within 62-61 on a pair of free throws by sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) with 1:59 left.

The Tigers scored the final 7 points of the game, getting baskets from Riley Mont and Moira McGinley, then sealing the outcome by going 3-for-4 from the free throw line during the final 12 seconds.

DePauw led by an 8-7 count after a 3-pointer by McGinley, but the Bishops reeled off the next 12 points, with Griner hitting a pair of shots from the lane and 3-pointers from junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and freshman guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) on the way to a 19-8 lead in the final minute of the opening quarter.

The Tigers came back to tie the game at 24 midway through the second period, but the Bishops went up by 5 on a jumper by junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) late in the half.

Griner's lay-in midway through the fourth quarter broke a 49-49 tie and put the Bishops ahead, but DePauw went up, 53-51, on an Ava Hassel 3-pointer with :59 left in regulation time.  After Griner and Shannon traded buckets, Schipfer worked for a lay-in to tie the game at 55 with :22 remaining, and the game when into overtime when Mont's jumper was off the mark in the final seconds.

Griner led the Bishops with 16 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds.  Schipfer finished with 14 points and shared the team lead with 7 boards, and Ross finished with 10 points.  Homan collected a game-high 6 assists.
