Ohio Wesleyan 8, Bluffton 0
Junior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) assembled 5.1 innings of scoreless work and combined with 3 relievers on a 5-hit shutout as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Bluffton in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday at Littick Field.
The Bishops took the lead without the benefit of a hit in the second inning. With 2 down, junior second baseman Blake Farley (Hudson) reached on a fielding error by Beaver second baseman Brady Mitosinka. Freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) then grounded to Mitosinka, who threw wildly past first base, allowing Farley to score.
Sophomore Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) singled home 2 runs in the fifth and Farley doubled in a run in the sixth before the Bishops broke the game open with a 4-run eighth inning that included a 2-run single by Vitense.
Meanwhile, Monos allowed a 1-out single in the first before getting an inning-ending double play, then yielded a 1-out single in the second before retiring the next 11 batters to get through the fifth inning. Monos gave up a walk and a single before leaving the game with 1 out in the fifth, and sophomore righthander Joe Liss (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) induced Nick Diana to bounce into an inning-ending double play. Liss allowed a leadoff walk in the seventh before getting another double play, the Bishops' third of the day.
Freshman righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) retired the visitors in order in the eighth and sophomore righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) worked a scoreless ninth.
Monos picked up the win, allowing 3 hits over the first 5.1 innings.
