Ohio Wesleyan to Celebrate Title IX, Honor Dr. Harriet Stewart

3/10/2023 9:00:00 AM

Ohio Wesleyan University will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX and the impact and legacy of women's sports at Ohio Wesleyan with special recognition of Dr. Harriet Stewart on Saturday, April 1.

The day will include a dedication of a special plaque for Stewart at Selby Stadium.  The dedication will acknowledge her vision and contributions as the leader and trailblazer in OWU women's intercollegiate athletics.  As a role model from the 1950s to the early 1980s, she was light-years ahead of Title IX, opening doors and laying the groundwork for women to have opportunities to grow, lead, and flourish in women's intercollegiate athletics and life, both then and into the future.

Members of the Stewart family will be among the speakers at the dedication ceremony, along with Doug Zipp, Ohio Wesleyan athletics director, and Dr. Jay Martin, men's soccer coach and former athletics director at Ohio Wesleyan.

In addition to the dedication, numerous other events are planned, including a program featuring a keynote address by Nan Carney-DeBord, former Ohio Wesleyan associate athletics director and women's basketball and field hockey coach, as well as other speakers, including alumna Robyn Morgan '73, current student-athletes, coaches, and more.

The schedule:
  • 10 a.m.:  Alumni games, various locations
  • Noon:  Dr. Harriet Stewart plaque dedication, Selby Stadium
  • 1 p.m.:  Women's athletics exhibit, Merrick Hall
  • 1:30-3 p.m.:  Celebration program and lunch, Merrick Hall, third floor
