Ohio Wesleyan 3, Eureka 1
Ohio Wesleyan 4, Eureka 0
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) knocked in the go-ahead run in both games and the Ohio Wesleyan pitching staff allowed 1 run in 14.0 innings of work as the Bishops swept a non-conference doubleheader against Eureka on Sunday in Millington, Tenn.
The Bishops took the lead in the first inning of the opener on singles by junior outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville), senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City), and freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.), but the Red Devils evened the score in the third as Brandt King singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Nick Rulevish.
Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning as Stefancin and Neff opened the inning with singles, with Stefancin checking in at third on Neff's hit. After Neff moved up on a wild pitch, Vitense was intentionally walked and Duckworth lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Stefancin for a 2-1 Bishop lead. The Bishops added an insurance run in the fifth as Stefancin led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Neff.
Neff was 3-for-3, while Stefancin went 2-for-2 with 3 runs scored and Vitense also went 2-for-2. Junior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) worked the first 6.0 innings, scattering 6 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1. Junior righthander Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) pitched a scoreless seventh to record a save.
In the nightcap, Duckworth smashed a home run to left to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead in the second. Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) knocked in a run during the Bishops' 2-run sixth, and Neff singled home a run in the seventh.
Eureka threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases as Colin DeLaere was hit by a pitch and Rulevish and Cole Tanner lined 2-out singles, but freshman righthander Hank Holman (Twinsburg) came on in relief and retired Braden Cox on a fly ball for the final out.
Sophomore third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) was 2-for-2 for Ohio Wesleyan. Freshman righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) pitched the first 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and fanning 5 while walking 1, to claim the win, and Holman was credited with a save.
