Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) smashed a 2-run double to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard, but Mount St. Joseph went on to record a non-conference win on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.
In Thursday's first game, Bowdoin posted a non-conference win over the Bishops.
Mount St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead in the second on back-to-back doubles by Kaci Finchum and Lauryn Miller. The Lions added 4 more runs in the third, highlighted by a 2-run homer from Courtney Keller.
Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the fourth as junior third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) and junior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) opened the inning with singles. Two outs later, Perkins delivered a double to left center to score both runs and bring the Bishops within 5-2.
The Lions responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run single by Finchum and a 2-run double by Emily McDonald, and Maddie Kennedy led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on an infield out to end the game.
Back went 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
