Ohio Wesleyan 5, Rowan 3
Ohio Wesleyan 10, Western New England 7
Sophomore outfielder Kaelyn Rodriguez (South El Monte, Calif.) lined a 2-run single to cap a 5-run first inning and junior shortstop Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) helped Ohio Wesleyan tie a school record in a non-conference win over 18th-ranked Rowan on Friday in Clermont, Fla. The Bishop win snapped the Profs' 14-game winning streak.
In Friday's second game, sophomore outfielder Alyssa Perkins (Fredericktown) drove in 4 runs, junior outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) knocked in 3 runs, and Rodriguez singled in the tying run and was the winning pitcher in relief as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Western New England.
Against Rowan, sophomore outfielder Avery Panozzo (Denver, Colo./Mullen) led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and singles by junior second baseman Sophia Cegledy (Pataskala/Bishop Hartley) and Anspach plated the first run of the game. Moore singled to reload the bases, and a walk to Perkins forced in another run. Sophomore first baseman Sophie Leohner (Columbus/Upper Arlington) reached on a fielder's choice, with all runners safe on the play to make it 3-0, and Rodriguez followed with a single to right center, scoring Perkins and Moore for a 5-0 Bishop lead.
The Profs narrowed the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Payton McNair and a 2-run triple by Liz McCaffery.
Rowan rallied in the seventh, loading the bases with one out on singles by Gabbie Fonollosa, MacNair, and Abigail Pawlowski, but McCaffrey lined into a game-ending double play, with Anspach making a diving stop and throwing to third base to double up Fonollosa. The double play was the Bishops' third of the game, tying the school record accomplished 4 times previously. All 3 Ohio Wesleyan twin killings started with line drives to Anspach, who then threw out Prof baserunners scrambling to get back.
Panozzo was 2-for-2 for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) worked the complete game, scattering 10 hits and striking out 1.
The Western New England game saw the Golden Bears take the lead on an RBI double by Dina DiBlasio in the first and the Bishops respond with 3 runs in the second, with RBI singles from Perkins and junior catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) during the inning.
WNEU tied the game on an RBI double from Paige Baca in the third and took a 7-3 lead with the help of RBI singles from DiBlasio and Kailey Carrano in the fourth.
Ohio Wesleyan evened the game with 4 runs in the fifth, with Moore delivering a 2-run single and Perkins and Rodriguez knocking in runs, and increased the lead to 10-7 in the sixth with the help of Perkins' 2-run single.
Perkins went 2-for-3 and drove in 4 runs for Ohio Wesleyan, while Moore drove in 3 runs and Anspach scored 3 runs. Rodriguez, who came on to pitch in the fourth and closed the game with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, was the winning pitcher.
