Box Score
Marietta 7, Ohio Wesleyan 6
Senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) slammed a 2-run homer as Ohio Wesleyan came back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game, but 20th-ranked Marietta pushed across the go-ahead run and went on to a non-conference win on Sunday in Marietta, snapping the Bishops' 5-game winning streak.
The Pioneers took the lead in the first as Alex Richter doubled and came in to score, then added 3 runs in the second, highlighted by Nick Bonnizzio's run-scoring triple and a sacrifice fly by Richter. Richter tripled and scored in the fourth and the hosts added an unearned run in the fifth to make it 6-0.
Sophomore third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) and junior outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) lined back-to-back RBI doubles to narrow the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth.
Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the eighth. Stefancin drew a one-out walk and Neff followed with a blast to right to bring the Bishops within 6-4. Sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) singled and freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) followed with a single, sending Stoner to third. Stoner scored on a wild pitch, with Vitense moving to second and then taking third on an infield out. Junior second baseman Blake Farley (Hudson) then beat out a bunt single, scoring Vitense with the tying run.
In the bottom of the inning, Matthew Busby led off with a bunt single, and Bonnizzio reached on a fielding error by junior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley). The runners moved up on a passed ball, and Richter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior lefthander Brandon Frankel (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) struck out Brett Carson for the second out, but Ben Kaplin drew a walk to force home Busby with the go-ahead run.
Neff and Stoner each went 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Sophomore righthander Joe Tepper (Centerburg) was the losing pitcher in relief.
