No rain or lightning could stop the Ohio Wesleyan from running up the score as the Battling Bishops stood true to their name, pushing towards a 16-8 win over the Allegheny Gators on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
Junior attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) had 7 goals for Ohio Wesleyan to help bring the Bishops back on top after the Gators got off to an early 3-0 lead. Allegheny outscored the Bishops 3-2 during the first quarter, but the Bishops came back to outscore them 14-5 the rest of the way. The Bishops sealed the deal with a 6-0 run to end the third and begin the fourth quarter.
Serena Perelman put the Gators on the scoreboard with goal in the opening minutes of the game, but Klabus answered with a goal, quickly followed by one from sophomore attacker Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) to tighten the score.
Ohio Wesleyan scored 5 goals in the second quarter to take the lead with senior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.), freshman midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto), freshman midfielder Sam Frary (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley Charter), and Klabus contributing goals to give the Bishops a 7-5 lead at the end of the half.
Klabus opened the second half of the match, scoring a goal a minute into the period, increasing her tally to 4 goals. The Bishops closed out the game with 3 free-position shots and a goal from junior attacker Sophia Staples-Roy (Hopkinton, N.H.) to bring the score to 16-8. Ohio Wesleyan outshot Allegheny, 34-24, and was awarded 9 free-position shots, making 6 of them to help its scoring advantage.
Klabus led Ohio Wesleyan with 7 goals, while Carlson, Trinh, and Staples-Roy finished with 2 goals each. Fleming led the team in assists, gathering 3. Freshman Cadence Jobe (Pickerington/Central) made 7 saves, all of them coming in the second quarter and beyond.
