Senior outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) singled home what proved to be the deciding run as Ohio Wesleyan topped Mount St. Joseph in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Cincinnati.
In the nightcap, the Lions built a 3-0 lead and went on to salvage a split of the twinbill.
Ohio Wesleyan struck for 2 runs in the top of the first inning of the opener when sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) led off the game with a single and scored on a double by senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City). Neff moved up to third on Pershin's fly ball to right and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley).
The Lions also got their first 2 runners on base in the bottom of the inning as Anton Mere walked and scored on a triple by Jake Lawson, but Lawson was stranded at third.
In the third, Stoner led off with an infield single and moved to second on a infield out by Neff. Pershing followed with a single to left, scoring Stoner for a 3-1 Bishop lead.
Mount St. Joseph closed to within 3-2 on an RBI single by Andrew Harrison, but the Bishops added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Noah Brazytis (Euclid/Cleveland St. Ignatius) and closed out the scoring on a solo shot by freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.).
Ysseldyke went 2-for-3 and junior outfielder Ryan Stefancin (Cleveland/North Ridgeville) was 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Sophomore righthander Joe Liss (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) picked up the win with 5.0 innings of 2-hit, shutout relief.
In the nightcap, MSJ got a solo homer from Ryan Murray in the first and RBI singles by Max Kline and Nicholas Shields in the third for a 3-0 lead.
Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a solo homer in the fourth.
Junior second baseman Blake Farley (Hudson) was 2-for-4 for the Bishops. Freshman righthander Parker Tomlin (Atlanta, Ga./Westerville (Ohio) Central) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
