Junior attacker Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) scored twice during a 3-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay as the Bishops remained undefeated with a non-conference win over Lynchburg on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
After an early Hornet goal within the first 20 seconds of the game, Ohio Wesleyan responded with 5 unanswered. Sophomore attacker Caroline Fleming (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Fayette) scored with 11:40 remaining in the first period, followed by back-to-back strikes by Klabus for an early 3-1 Bishop lead.
Senior attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.), sophomore midfielder Amara Carlson (Dublin/Coffman), and junior midfielder Sophia DelGallo (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) also chipped in towards the end of the first period.
Lynchburg knotted it all up at 7 in the beginning of the second half, thanks to a score by McKenna Steinau.
Fleming and Klabus added on to their scoring totals, racking up three goals combined to cap off the third period and put the Bishops ahead to stay.
The Hornets rallied to keep it close in the fourth, after a goal by Reagan Bednar cut the lead to 11-10 with 5:07 remaining in the ball game. DelGallo's clutch free-position shot made it a 2-goal lead for the Bishops with 4:09 left.
Lynchburg closed to within 12-11 on a free-position goal by Tori King with 2:59 to play, and Hornet keeper M.J. Tucker made a save on a free-position shot by Fleming with 1:44 to go, but the Bishop defense came up with a turnover with 1:20 remaining and Ohio Wesleyan was able to maintain possession for the remainder of the game.
Klabus led all scorers with 5 goals on the day, while Fleming added a hat trick. DelGallo had 2 goals to go along with 1 assist. Freshman Cadence Jobe (Pickerington/Central) recorded 8 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.
