Freshman midfielder Garrett Smith (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored to kick off a 6-0 second-quarter run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.
The teams battled almost all the way through the first quarter before Wittenberg's Nathan Brown tallied a goal with :40 remaining in the period for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
Smith scored just over a minute into the second quarter to even the game, and sophomore midfielder Brady Hunt (Maineville/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) followed with a man-down score just over a minute later to put the Bishops ahead to stay. A minute after that, freshman midfielder Dennis Van Der Wal (San Anselmo, Calif./Redwood) and senior midfielder Kyle Parry (Duxbury, Mass.) rang up goals just 8 seconds apart to increase the margin to 4-1, and freshman attacker Xander Craven (Franklinville, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and sophomore attacker Carson Geier (Milford/Milford) added goals less than a minute apart midway through the quarter for a 6-1 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Wittenberg got goals from Blake Roller and Colten Simkins just seconds apart during the final minute of the third period as the hosts rallied to within 8-5, but Craven scored twice during a 3-1 burst that opened the fourth quarter and gave the Bishops an 11-6 advantage. Geier added a score midway through the final period for a 12-7 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Geier led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Craven finished with 3. Sophomore goalkeeper Nathan George (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) posted 8 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan goal.
