Sophomore outfielder Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) delivered a walk-off single to give Ohio Wesleyan a win over DePauw in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the opener, DePauw broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth and pulled away in the late innings to take the win.
Ohio Wesleyan led, 12-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap. With one out, freshman second baseman Jack Bates (Westerville/South) lined a double to left, then moved to third on an infield out. Stoner followed with a single to score Bates for a 13-3 lead and end the game per the NCAC's run rule.
The Bishops erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, stringing together 5 consecutive hits at one point. Junior outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) delivered a bases-clearing double during his first at-bat of the inning, then came up to the plate later in the inning, again with the bases loaded, and was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Senior shortstop D.J. Neff (Grove City) drew a bases-loaded walk and junior first baseman Dillon Ysseldyke (Hilliard/Bradley) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Bishops a 12-0 lead in the second.
DePauw got an RBI double from Carter Knoll in the fourth and a solo homer from Danny Glimco in the sixth before Hunter Hrbek knocked in a run in the top of the seventh to keep the game going.
Stoner was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Ysseldyke went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Padilla was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Junior righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) worked the complete game, striking out 7 and walking 3.
Padilla gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning of the opener, but the Tigers pushed across unearned runs in the second and fourth to take the lead.
Freshman catcher Alex Snyder (Massillon/Jackson) led off the home fourth with a solo shot to tie the game at 2, but DePauw retook the lead on 3 hit batsmen and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
The Tigers pulled away with 3 runs in the eighth, highlighted by Glimco's 2-run double, and 4 runs in the ninth.
Stoner was 3-for-4, freshman catcher Zane Vitense (Maple Grove, Minn.) went 3-for-5, and Neff and Padilla each were 2-for-4. Junior righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
